The New York Peace Institutes, in partnership with the Westchester-Rockland Mediation Centers of CLUSTER inc., is holding an In-person Basic Mediation Training at the Caramoor Center for Music and Art in Katonah, New York daily from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm from Monday, May 17th – Friday, May 21st.

Caramoor’s tented outdoor facilities provide an opportunity to be safe and socially distanced without compromising everything that makes the Basic Mediation Training experience so special – group discussions, hands-on exercises, and giving participants a chance to practice new skills with support and feedback from experienced mediators and trainers.

This training is Part 146 approved, and it lays the groundwork for anyone interested in becoming a mediator and enhancing their conflict resolution skills. Additionally, applicants who complete this BMT are eligible to apply, and their applications are favored, for New York Peace Institute’s or W.R.M.C. of CLUSTER’s Apprenticeship Program and joining our roster of volunteer community mediators.

During the training we explore questions like:

  • What is mediation and how does it compare to other forms of alternative dispute resolution?
  • What are the core skills I need to be an effective mediator?
  • What are the foundational values of mediation?
  • How can I identify and respond to power imbalances?
  • How can I identify and respond to different values, cultural norms, and biases?
  • What is my role as a mediator?
  • What are the best practices for online mediation?
  • What is a successful mediation?

Chris Daly Esq. will be the lead trainer and will be joined by NYPI and CLUSTER staff and coaches. The training will be interactive, and a variety of learning methods will be used including:

  • simulations
  • role plays
  • practice exercises
  • video clips
  • dedicated question and answer sessions

CLE credit will be offered pending approval of accreditation of this course. This training is approved for 24 hours of Initial Mediation Training by the New York State Unified Court System’s Office of ADR Programs under Part 146. Final placement on any court roster is at the discretion of the local Administrative Judge, and participation in a course does not guarantee placement on a local court roster. Some courts may require additional training and experience beyond Part 146’s requirements. Acceptance on court rosters may depend on a court’s need for mediators at any given time and may include a particular court’s need for mediators with specific case-type training or experience.

This in-person BMT will cost $1,625 per person for the full 5-day training. Please note that to obtain your certificate, you must attend the entire training. We have a limited number of spots and they usually go quickly. You can register for the training here: https://nypeace.paylite.net/ViewMerchandise.aspx?ID=6f64b427-7f1d-434f-8786-eb4187d4c447
